Review The Enchanting of Miss Elliot
Oh my goodness, The Enchanting of Miss Elliot was such a treat! Grace Hitchcock has done it again with another captivating story in the Aprons & Veils series. This friends-to-lovers romance, set against the backdrop of the Wild West and the charming world of Harvey Girls, completely swept me away. From the moment Lorna Elliot, a spunky and independent woman who becomes a Harvey Girl waitress on a dare (and let's be honest, to escape her feelings for the town sheriff!), steps onto the page, you're hooked.
I loved Lorna's spirit. She's determined, stubborn, and wonderfully flawed, making her incredibly relatable. She's trying to move on from a past crush, but fate (or maybe a very handsome sheriff) has other plans. Sheriff Gaston Reid, Lorna's childhood friend and her brother's best friend, is equally compelling. He's a classic hero – protective, charming, and secretly harboring a long-held affection for Lorna. Their chemistry is palpable, simmering beneath the surface of their friendly banter and playful teasing. The "friends-to-lovers" trope is handled beautifully, showcasing the slow burn of their connection and the gradual realization of their deeper feelings. It’s not just instant attraction, it’s the kind of comfortable familiarity that builds into something truly special.
The plot itself keeps you guessing. The escape of a dangerous outlaw and his gang adds a thrilling layer of suspense, injecting plenty of action and excitement into the narrative. The danger isn't just background noise; it directly impacts Lorna and Reid, forcing them to confront their feelings and rely on each other for survival. The inclusion of faith as a subtle but significant element adds a beautiful dimension to their relationship and their individual journeys. It’s a heartwarming aspect that feels natural and authentic, strengthening the overall emotional impact of the story.
The supporting characters also add a lot to the story. The other Harvey Girls provide a sense of community and friendship for Lorna, adding to the charm and warmth of the setting. The descriptions of the Harvey House hotels and the stunning landscapes of the Old West truly transport you to another time and place. I found myself completely immersed in the world Hitchcock created.
While the large print edition was a bonus for easier reading (especially enjoyable for those of us who need a little extra help with the smaller print!), the story itself was fantastic and kept me completely enthralled. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the funny situations and holding my breath during the more suspenseful moments. If you're looking for a charming historical romance with a touch of adventure, faith, and plenty of swoon-worthy moments, The Enchanting of Miss Elliot is absolutely worth your time. Seriously, add this to your TBR pile – you won't regret it!
